Psychologists

This is probably what you would first think of when someone says psychologist. Psychologists offer talk based therapy over a number of sessions treating clients cross the age spectrum.

They’ve study at least 4 years university degree and 2 years internship with supervisions to be endorsed as a psychologist. Psychologists is the general term with further specialties listed below.

Clinical Psychologists

Clinical Psychologists hold either a Masters or Doctorate degrees in Psychology (minimum 6 years) as well as supervised internship (1 or 2 years).

Like general Psychologists they offer talk based therapy over a number of sessions and treat common disorders like anxiety and depression.

Clinical Neuropsychologists

A Neuropsychologist are specialist that perform and interpreting cognitive testing. Neuropsychology testing might include IQ, memory and executive functioning tests.

They might be called on to assist diagnosis and treatment of those with memory problems, ADHD, dementia or acquired brain injuries.

They’re required to hold a Masters or Doctorate degree and specialist internship with a registered member.

Educational & Developmental Psychologists

Educational and Developmental psychologist focus on learning through-out all age groups for young children to older adults. However, most commonly with children from early childhood to school age.

They asses developmental, learning and behavior difficulties and might be call on for diagnosis of disabilities and disorders, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders.

They’re required to hold a Masters or Doctorate degree and specialist internship with a registered member.

Counselling Psychologists

Counselling psychologists provide assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based therapies to assist clients to resolve mental health disorders or psychological problems. Like clinical psychologists additional study is required to gain this title.

Forensic Psychologists

Forensic psychologists work in the legal arena. Commonly they will work with police, correctional services and withing the legal justice system.

They’re required to hold a Masters or Doctorate degree and specialist internship with a registered member.

Health Psychologists

Health psychologist use their skills to promote healthy behaviours  and the reduction of unhealthy behaviours such as poor diet, smoking etc. They may be helpful in assistance clients with self-management of chronic illness, injury or disability.

Organisational Psychologists

Organisational psychologists work with individuals and teams within work settings to increase performance in the workplace.

They’re required to hold a Masters or Doctorate degree and specialist internship with a registered member.

Sport & Exercise Psychologists

Australian Sports Psychologists apply the theories of psychology to maximize athletes performance and enjoyment. They’re required to hold a Masters or Doctorate degree to be endorse with this title.

Community Psychologists

Community psychologist deal with issues affecting individuals, groups and the community as a whole.  They may work do work with governments and law enforcement on shaping policy or more directly through shelters, substance abuse treatment centers and schools.

They’re required to hold a Masters or Doctorate degree and specialist internship with a registered member.
